JUNIOR CAMP
Skill development in all our core programs is encouraged. Many opportunities for choices exist in our program -- so that campers can focus on what interests them.
YOUTH CAMP
The campers in Youth camp get their first try at RKY's regular program. Skill development in all our core programs is encouraged. Many opportunities for choices exist in our program -- so that campers can focus on what interests them. Youth campers go on an overnight canoe trip on Eagle Lake to introduce them to camping.
SENIOR CAMP
Our oldest campers enjoy all of the programs and instruction as the Youth Campers do. In addition, though, there are special Senior Camp programs aimed at teenagers. Senior Campers may also choose to take part in the RKY Rag Program, which invites our oldest campers to challenge themselves personally and spiritually in order to help them grow. Our Senior Campers go off-site for a canoe trip of three or four days in length.
LEADERS IN TRAINING (L.I.T.)
L.I.T.s are 15 or 16 years old, and they stay at camp for two weeks. The goals of this first year of the RKY Camp Leadership Program are:
- to develop skills and abilities valuable to an outdoor leader
- to build positive self-esteem and increase self-awareness
- to gain confidence in leading and planning camp activities
- to develop an understanding of leadership roles and skills
- to gain an awareness of group dynamics and teamwork
As an introduction to leadership, L.I.T.s will spend time in all the camp program areas, working together and alone on challenges designed to fine-tune skills and communication. A canoe trip is integral to the program.
No experience is necessary to be an L.I.T. However, space is limited.
COUNSELLORS IN TRAINING (C.I.T.)
Counsellors in Training are 16 and 17 years old, and are at RKY Camp for almost a month. As the second and final year of our Leadership Program, its goals are:
- to develop skills and abilities valuable to an outdoor leader
- the development of skills specifically related to working with children
- to gain an understanding of counselling and instructional roles and responsibilities
- to further explore and refine interpersonal and intrapersonal skills
- to develop an awareness of potential outcomes associated with wilderness experiences
Many of our Leadership Program graduates become our staff at some point in the future. For this reason, we use our children's program at camp to assist us in further developing the leadership ability of C.I.T.s. C.I.T.s spend the majority of their time at camp in placements alongside instructors and camp counsellors, working along with them and learning by experience. C.I.T.s also have opportunities to meet other YMCA Camp Leaders through visits to other YMCA Camps in Ontario.
Demand for this program far exceeds the number of spaces available. In addition, admittance is by application only. Those candidates with the most experience, qualifications, and potential will be selected. |
