RKY CAMP REVITALIZATION UPDATE
RKY Camp is committed to maintaining and improving the facilities and infrastructure of the camp. In 2017-18, RKY invested in the construction of a state of the art Waterloo Bio-Filter waste-water treatment system to protect our precise lake, and installed a new backup power generator.
In 2018, the Camp invested in three new sleeping cabins and a new staff house for the Camp Director and family. This year, RKY will invest over $2 million in the construction of a new dining hall to be ready for Spring 2020. And in 2020/21 the camp will transform the existing Homestead building into a renewed outdoor education centre.
The renovated Homestead Outdoor Education Centre - Fall / Winter 2020
Built in 1979 by Brit Smith and Homestead Land Holdings, the camp’s first Homestead building no longer has the kitchen and dining room capacity to support our current camper numbers. After 40 years of service, the time has come to re-purpose the Homestead into a barrier-free, outdoor education centre allowing us to offer a new four-season program area.
The original Homestead building will be transformed into a renewed education and staffing space where it will continue to be the hub of the camp for our staff, wilderness tripping and leadership programs throughout the year.
A New Dining Hall - Fall/ Winter 2019/20
With the re-creation of a traditional four season, lodge-style configuration, the arrival point lobby will open directly into the main dining hall, creating a large welcome centre for campers and community guests.
A new commercial kitchen will continue to support the nutritional needs for RKY Camp. This sustainable building will also feature enlarged windows overlooking activity areas. The Centre will be connected via pathways back to the original Homestead
outdoor education centre and the centre of camp.
The addition of a new dining hall, that may serve as a multi-purpose programming space, will enable RKY to expand relationships with school boards, colleges, universities, businesses, clubs and other organizations who share our vision on the importance of investing in leadership and outdoor education.
